Magpie Mine is one of the top Industrial Heritage sites in Derbyshire, with such fascinating history dating back to the 19th Century.

It was the last working lead mine in the Derbyshire Orefield with a history stretching back more than 200 years.

It is known to have been troubled by disputes with neighbouring mines and in 1833 three Maypit miners were suffocated by fumes from fires lit by the Magpie Miners and the wives of the three who died put a curse on the mine, which is now known as the ‘Widows Curse’

In 1974 Magpie Mine was listed as a Schedules Monument in recognition of its national importance. A testament to such an amazing place to visit with the entire family.
